Catharine Stebbins

I am largely self-taught - inspired by the quality of light, color, and composition in 17th century Dutch paintings; the forced perspective in natural history dioramas; and the lyrical beauty of Andy Goldsworthy’s ephemeral sculpture. My work deals primarily with the psychological and physical manifestations of one’s personal connection to place, and the humorous intersection of science and daily life. I feel like a painter, but in the absence of skill with a painter’s tools, I use my camera to brush into life my own powerful feelings, emotions and reactions to my environment.
My work has been featured in solo and group shows in Los Angeles and New York, is held in private collections and was recently acquired by 4Culture, a Seattle WA public art initiative. An exhibit from the series CERTAIN PLACES was reviewed in ArtScene, April 2007. I currently live and work in Altadena, CA.
